Description
The band have been previewing 4 new tracks in their recent live sets Congratulations, Its Working, Flash Delirium, and Song For Dan Treacy. Describing the album title, the band explained "It was more of a sarcastic congratulations. It just feels right. It's funnier now. We had no idea what was going to happen with the first album in terms of success or radio play. You know, it's been a crazy year so now it's even more annoying that the second albums called congratulations."
This is going to be a brilliant way to start 2010.

Comments about Mgmt - Congratulations:
Much better than their first album. Here they have moved on from commercial, catchy pop to music that they want to pursue for their own interests. We end up with a psychadelic array of masterpieces which could easily have been recorded in the summer (of love) in hippy 1967.
best album of the year so far, no hit singles, but songs are catchy and brilliant nontheless.

First impressions are that this isn't as immediate as Oracular Spectacular. Most of the tracks have less obvious hooks than the first album, which may confuse or frustrate on a first listen if you think you are getting more of the same. In the same way as when Radiohead made Kid A, not everybody will "get it".
Hang on though... it stands up to repeated plays, with a quirky ambiance that leads on from the second half of the first album. If after repeated listens, you still only listened to the singles of Oracular Spectacular, you probably won't be into this, but if you found yourself strangely drawn in by their trippy dreamlike melodies, you will find another quality selection of their off the wall tunes.

Comments about Mgmt - Congratulations:
Ironically the first song title on the new cd by MGMT is called "it's working", one could say if it's not broken then why try & fix it. Certainly the debut, Oracular Spectacular, worked so you might ask why try & change a winning formula?
This reminds me of the move made by Pulp when they followed up the multi selling "Different Class" with "This is Hardcore" which was as uncommercial as its predecessor was commercial, a difficult first listen but a grower after repeated listens.
With Oracular Spectacular the first five songs were so catchy & accessible that they had hits written all over them. Had the album been released during the summer it would have been the perfect summer soundtrack.
Congratulations starts off as a slow burner & doesn't have the immediacy as their debut. For me the album doesn't kick in until the third song 'someone is missing',while 'flash delirium' the first song to surface from the cd, teases to one to think that maybe they can replicate the glory from the first release. We even have a 12 minute opus here which meanders a bit but doesn't quite bore.
Overall I would definitely recommend this cd which requires patience particularly from a fanbase that was expecting Oracular Spectacular part two.
A brave & bold move by MGMT.

An enjoyable album which is quite different from their last highly rated one. You will notice many influences throughout the very well constructed album. Definitely one that you should consider buying.
